A Top Ten
1) DARK STAR - GRATEFUL DEAD (Live Dead)
Still considered the best ever version of this epic piece of subversive ensemble playing... snatched from the "High baroque" period of the dead, and replete with swirling organ to complement Jerry Garcia's astonishing guitar work. The song went through many evolutions, but was essentially retired in 1974 - then fitfully restored tolife from1989 -1995. Another stand-out version comes from Wembly, UK, 1972 and has finally been released commercially inthe excellent "Stepping Out" CD.
2) MONA: QUICKSILVER (Happy Trails)
The briefer epic from Quicksilver's Happy Trails album, usually eclipsed by the over-long "Who Do you Love", but a wonderfully twisty, sinuous piece of jamming.
3) SEVEN BY SEVEN: HAWKWIND (Space Ritual)
Magnificently wierd, lurching rambling from Hawkwind at their finest, with an unforgettable sneering narration fromBob Calvert
4) SHOULDN'T DO THAT: HAWKWIND (In Search of Space)
Strange epic enlivened by the urgent whispers of that one phrase.. the track runs out of steam on several occasions, but hey, we're all human.
5) ALAN'S PSYCHEDELIC BREAKFAST: PINK FLOYD (Atom Heart Mother)
No one seems to remember this strange piece, that made up the space on Atom Heart Mother, but if your mind was altered, this was an awesome ambient soundtrack to savour.
6) MY NAME IS DEATH: INCREDIBLE STRING BAND (greatest hits?)
Just to wierd you out nicely, comes this morbid reminder of what awaits us all. The Incredibles may have played many instruments badly, but they wrote extremely well, when they had a mind to.
7) WON'T YOU TRY: JEFFERSON AIRPLANE (Woodstock)
This strange, harsh song, seems to sum up a band who determined to do 6 things at once, each member without paying much attention to any other band member. Bizarre, but whenit worked, it worked..
8) SELF: QUINTESSENCE (SElf)
Absolute heroes, my favourite group, worthy, pompous, humourless but with a wonderful mix of Indian philosophy and plain jamming rock. This live album is a joy from start to finish and is required listening
9) TRANSLUCENT CARRIAGES: PEARLS BEFORE SWINE (Balaklava)
Ah me..this brings back the years..bought it in a clearance bin in 1973.. Utterly compelling opening track, unearthly, cosmic,you name it. Tom Rapp achieves greatness, shock ,horror.
10) RIVER SONG: NICK DRAKE (Five leaves left)
The possibilities of music around the turn of 1970 seemed endless, but only Nick Drake ever really managed to integrate an orchestral arrangement without making it sound forced. This is a glowing, golden song and you must hear it!
