Liquid Courage |
Hello Pooterland! I've always loved concert footage from the 60s/70s with the psychedelic analog visuals. As soon as I learned what they actually were, I knew I wanted to figure out how to recreate them. I learned a lot from Liquid Light Lab's online tutorials, and a lot just from messing around on an overhead projector I bought off Craigslist. The thought didn't originally occur to me that I might put myself out there and do concert visuals (I thought it would be more of a fun hobby or atmosphere for a gathering with friends), but one day my friend Lauren happened to mention she was looking for a Liquid Light Show for her live shows and our stage-relationship grew organically from our friendship with the Light Show starting in 2017. It started with an old fashioned overhead projector, now use an Elmo document camera and a home movie projector. I'm always experimenting with whatever is within arm's reach, but I think even my nonstandard objects are still pretty standard--straws, mason jars, even a wine glass once. I also love playing with cut-outs and foam letters either floating in the liquids or stuck to the top plate Kam and I were dating at the time and he came onboard to help me, and was very supportive as we threw ourselves into the deep end of live concert visuals and figuring it out as we went along. Joshua Light Show were a big infuelnce though I don't claim to be anything like his work! Have worked mostly with Lauren Ruth Ward, but have also worked with Sunburnt Mosquito Bite, Slugs, Vista Kicks, Emma Cole, Georgi K, Rivvrs, Bamenda The name came from the fact I knew I would need courage to make public art and I love a pun Kam's last gig with the light show was in February 2020. From then on, just me: Dara Jaffe I don't know how amusing this is but one of my favorite gigs was a five hour Led Zeppelin covers-only night at Harvard & Stone involving 20 different bands ! I feel like my light show is still in its infancy, and it's a pretty minor operation with just me :) Dara Jaffe - January 2021 |
