Ben Van Meter from Oklahoma moved to San Francisco in 1961 to study at San Francisco State College.

He was a Filmmaker, Artist and then became one of the earliest Light Show operators in the Bay Area.

Initially his shows were billed as Ben Van Meter (often with Roger Hillyard), before they became more widely known as North American Ibis Alchemical Company who did shows in the San Francisco area up until 1968 when the light show was disbanded.

He taught filmmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute from 1968 to 1979 and received an M.F.A. degree in 1974
