Try and categorise stuff
to make it interesting, unless you can think of an ultimate
psych top ten, personally we would have to break it down (cos
we cannot decide on 10 tracks!!!! and also we get to compile
several charts instead of one!!!).

Today's top 10 obscure psychedelic albums you can get cheap!
Sick
of paying 50, 100 or more dollars for highly-touted psychedelic
rarities only to be disappointed when they don't live up to
the hype?
Here's ten totally fantasticalbums that you can get cheap--for
30 dollars or less, and in some cases for less than ten bucks.
1.
Zephyr - SUNSET RIDE. Tommy Bolin
left the band and then everybody ignored them. They also ignored
the fact that they went on to make an album that's not only
a zillion times better than the ones with Bolin, but best
album in that huge genre of psychy blues-rock albums with
female singers.
2.
Chrysalis - DEFINITION. The most
beautiful folk-psych album of them all. Stunning songwriting
and performances. Amazingly, it's never been reissued.
3.
Kensington Market - AARDVARK.
Along with Plastic Cloud (which WILL cost you thousands),
the cream of Canadian psych. Brilliant album with amazingly
diverse and creative songs.
4.
Daughters of Albion - DAUGHTERS OF ALBION.
Completely ignored and forgotten album that twists sunshiny
pop into every bizarre form imaginable.
Kathy Yesse's gorgeous voice and a dozen singalong melodie
are given even more substance by weird production tricks,
odd song structures, inpenetrable lyrics ("alms and balms
and kumquats, Charlie") and an unbelieveable 7-minute
summation of the year 1968 that sounds like it was written
in 1958.
5.
Colours - COLOURS. You can tell
from the spelling of their name that these guys wish they
were British. Fantastic songs here, including one of the best
orchestrated pop songs ever ("Bad Day At Black Rock,
Baby") and a pretty fair summation (parody?) of the free-loving
60s ("Brother Lou's Love
Colony.")
6.
Grapefruit - AROUND. An even
better Beatles imitation. Merges 1965 with 1968 quite nicely.
7.
Damnation of Adam Blessing - SECOND
DAMNATION. Not psychedelic, I suppose, but pretty much
the best hard rock album of the early 70s. Why this hasn't
achieved classic status is a total mystery to me.
8.
Mortimer - MORTIMER. Another
beautiful psych/pop album that no one remembers, except Richard
Davies, who actually covered one of these songs on the self-titled
album by Cardinal.
9.
Thorinshield: S/T. As good a
RUBBER SOUL wannabe album as you'll hear.
10.
Karen Beth - THE JOYS OF LIFE.
Yeah, she's got a weird-ass voice, and maybe that's why nobody
bought or remembers this, but other than the opening horn-dominated
song, this is probably the best acid-folk album by a female
singer-songwriter.

Ten Something...
|
|
1.
Magic Carpet - Same
- When I first started hearing about all the rare UK psychedelic
folk with sitars and female vocals I was usually disappointed
because it was this record I was hearing in my imagination.
When I first heard this I felt like I'd come home.
2. Bob
Dylan - Bringing
It All Back Home - I remember hearing "Subterranean
Homesick Blues" on the a.m. car radio in 1965 and saying
"Pull over! Pull over!" and jumping out of the car
to see if the aliens were landing. There was nothing like
this until there was this (and I'm
not sure that's true of anything else).
3. The
Beatles - I Am
The Walrus - Racing across a 6-lane highway on foot
to buy the 45 of "Hello Goodbye" the day it was
released, my friends and I listened and then flipped it over
and everything was, I don't know... different from that point
on. I believe the fact that it took B-side status to the very
sub-par A-side became the core of John's animosity toward
Paul from that point on.
4. The
Rolling Stones - Gomper
- The MONO version from "Their Satanic Majesties..."
For psychedelia, one might assume that stereo would always
be superior to mono sound. Listening to this I conclude that
one would be very wrong. A thin and boring LP in stereo, the
mono version is a revelation and this is the most psychedelic
these boys EVER got.
5. The
Chambers Brothers - Time
Has Come Today - Live in Philadelphia at The Electric
Factory, circa 1968. The back wall was lined with coffins
placed at just the right angle so you could lie down while
standing up. I was 15 years old, this was my first concert,
this song lasted about 9 hours and by the end I knew one day
I would take drugs and that that day
would be very soon.
6. Biff
Rose - Uncle Jesus
Auntie Christ - Both the 1972 A&M LP, which is
brilliant, and the Christmas eve 1973 evening at The Main
Point, a tiny club just outside of Philadelphia, on 900 mics
of the legendary Philadelphia blotter acid sitting in the
dark exploding redness while
this combination of Mose Allison and Bill Evans on LSD whipped
the small room into a slow intense fury that ended with a
small blue light hitting his face as his eyes just happened
to be staring straight into mine as he sang "He's only
a shell of a man, but if you hold him to your ear you can
hear the ocean ROAR!" Thank you.
7. Van Morrison -
Moondance - Yeah, all the psych guys pick "Astral
Weeks" which is brilliant BUT the image I have always
had of Van is of a wrestling ring in which James Brown and
Jackie Wilson are in one corner, and William Butler Yeats
and John Donne are in the other. On every album one of these
teams pins the other, except this one; here they meet in the
middle of the ring, smoke a joint and go off to a pub arm
in arm.
8. Miles
Davis - Agharta
- Just before his death, Jimi Hendrix had booked time for
his first sessions with Miles. These never happened and there
is no record of their ever having recorded together. Pete
Cosey's playing on this double live LP is the close we will
ever come and it's almost close enough.
9. Forever
Amber - The Love
Cycle - 99 copies pressed in 1969 and the thing is...
if this had been a major label band it would be remembered
as one of the finest moments of the period. The fact that
it was a bunch of teenagers from the north of England who
did this and disappeared forever makes it an accomplishment
of incredible proportions. More memorable hooks per inch than
any record ever made, Zombies meets Beach Boys harmonies to
does for. Better than "Odyssey & Oracle" and
"Pet Sounds" and I'll stand on Brian Wilson's coffee
table in my bare feet and shout it.
10. George
Harrison - Within You Without
You - OK so it's The Beatles and yes it's a sentimental
favorite because he recently died and maybe "Love To
You" made a bigger initial impression but there's no
better first song side two within a thousand miles of this
and the impression it made when you flipped that impossibly
shiny record over for the very first time is impossible to
describe.

Subliminal
Sonic Laxatives (15 mind-numbing guitar/instrumental acid
freakouts!)
|
|
1.
Section 43 (Country
Joe & The Fish) (pure
bliss!)
2. Eastern Jam (Country
Joe & The Fish) (some
of the most wigged out guitar playing ever recorded from a
Bay Area band!)
3. East
> West (Butterfield
Blues Band) (Their
finest moment?!)
4. Acapulco
Gold & Silver (Quicksilver
MS) (The definition
of the San Francisco Sound!)
5. April
15th (The Human Beinz)
(Raw, fuzzed-out pandemonium!)
6. Ganges
(Bardo Pond) (Thick,
Heavy, Swirling, All Consuming, Simply put...Awesome!)
7. Spare
Chaynge (Jefferson Airplane)
(A superb psych jam,
by a band not as comfortable with improvised jamming as some
of their contemporaries)
8. Interstellar
Overdrive (Pink Floyd)
(Raw, Primitive, Mind-Expandingly
good!)
9. Dark
Star (Grateful Dead)
(Sure, there are lyrics
here, but hey, most of its 20+ minutes is Jerry and the boys
noodling away!)
10. Maggot
Brain (Funkadelic) (Dare
I be controversial? Eddie Hazel's guitar work on this
track rivals Hendrix! There, I said it!)
11. Sunflower
Power (Canned Heat)
(Henry Vestine creates
sonic space on this all too short of a track from their best
album "Livin The Blues")
12. Chocolate
Angel (Neighb'rhood Child'rn)
(Very Psyched out!)
13. Magnolia
Caboose Babyfinger (Blue
Cheer) (Psychedelic Heavy Metal
before the term was coined!)
14. Baroque
No. 1 (Ultimate Spinach)
(Sounding like
CJ & The Fish, The Spinach create great swirling melodies
on this blissed out track from their 1st LP-clearly before
the bad trip of "Behold & See" set in!),
15. My Father,
My King (Mogwai)
(20+ minutes of melodic
guitar work which climaxes into sheer white noise. One of
the best new guitar bands around! Absolutely stunning as a
live act too!!)
Happy New Year!
